With Global Doc settings, you improve governance by automatically applying preferred settings to every new Doc. This saves you time and ensures brand consistency across all Docs. ⚙️
💡Global Doc settings feed into the Doc settings, which apply to one Foleon Doc. We've decided on some default values for you, so even if you don't set them, you can still publish your content.

Which Foleon settings are there?
Foleon is more than just content creation. To ensure your Foleon Docs are set up correctly beneath the surface, there are several settings to consider:
- Page settings 📄 — Settings of a specific page of your Foleon Doc. E.g. SEO settings
- Doc settings 📘 — Control settings of a Foleon Doc. E.g. navigation settings
- Project settings 🗂️ — Control settings of all Docs in a project. E.g. Google Analytics
- Global Doc settings 🌐 — Pre-configure Doc settings for every new Doc. E.g. cookie consent
In this article, you'll learn all about these Global Doc settings and how they interact with the Doc settings.
How to set Global Doc settings
In the dashboard, navigate to account > Global Doc settings. On this page, admins and designers can preconfigure seven settings. Every new Foleon Doc will start with these settings, whether you start a Doc from scratch or from a template.
We've decided on some default values for you, so even if you don't set the Global Doc settings, you can still publish your content.
💡When you duplicate a Foleon Doc, the duplicate will have exactly the same settings as the original. This means it won't necessarily have the Global Doc settings, unless the original had them as well.
These are the seven settings that you can automatically set to be reflected in the Doc settings of every new Doc:
-
Cookie consent — Every Foleon Doc has cookies, and according to GDPR regulations, you need to inform your readers about these cookies. You can do so using the cookie consent pop-up. Learn more.
-
Private preview — You can preview your Foleon Doc to see what it looks like outside the content editor. There are two options for visibility: private and public. Learn more.
-
Search engine visibility — Foleon Docs are optimized for search engines but are not crawled and indexed by default. This means your content won't be publicly available in search engines unless you want it to be. Learn more.
-
IP anonymization in Google Analytics — By default, you anonymize IP addresses in Google Analytics to adhere to EU privacy regulations. Learn more.
-
Remarketing code — Do you want to add tracking or remarketing codes to your Foleon Doc? Copy-paste the script that your tool provides here. Learn more.
-
GTM code — Use Google Tag Manager (GTM) to gather your tags in a single container. Fill in the header code of your container here, and you’re all set (the footer code isn’t necessary). Learn more.
- Foleon branding — Disable this setting to hide the Foleon branding in the navigation bar. No hard feelings.
💡 Global Doc settings are set in the Main Workspace and automatically apply to all Child Workspaces and every newly created Doc across the entire customer account. You can’t customize settings for individual Child Workspaces, but that's on our radar.
When you configure these settings in the Global Doc settings, every new Foleon Doc will automatically have them. You can find them in the Doc settings.

What happens to the Doc settings?
💡Even if you haven't set Global Doc settings already, we've decided on default values for you. This means that for new Docs the settings will already be configured. You can change them to fit your needs.
When a setting matches what's in the Global Doc settings, you'll see a 'Global' label, as illustrated in the image below.
⚠️ Any change you make in the Global Doc settings will automatically be reflected in the Doc settings. If you want to apply this change to a published (live) Foleon Doc, you must (re)publish.
If you make a change in the Doc settings that deviates from the Global Doc settings an admin or designer set, you'll see a 'Custom' label. This means the setting now no longer matches with the Global Doc settings.
Read on to learn how you can revert back to the Global Doc settings.

As an example, have a look at the timeline of how customer Acme has used Global Doc settings 👇
- 13 May: Global Doc settings release — Foleon has decided on default settings.
- 15 May: Tom changes Global Doc settings to fit Acme Inc.’s needs.
- 20 May: Lisa starts a new Doc from a template (she does not duplicate). It automatically has the Global Doc settings that Tom set.
- 21 May: Lisa publishes her newsletter.
- 22 May: Tom changes the GTM code in the Global Doc settings. This change is automatically reflected in the Doc settings of Lisa’s Newsletter. It will not be implemented into the live Doc unless she republishes.
- 23 May: Lisa republishes her Doc — now with the new GTM code implemented.
Reset to Global Doc settings
If you changed a Doc setting and later want to revert back to the Global Doc settings, you can click the reset button. This will restore all settings of this section to their original value values as defined in the Global Doc settings. Be careful; this will override one or more setting(s).
After a reset, you'll see the 'Global' label again for all settings.
💡 You can also use the reset button to apply your Global Doc settings to content you created before this feature's release (May 13, 2024).
Lock Doc settings
With lock Doc Settings, we empower content creators to lock one or more Global Doc settings from one central location. When locked, other team members can't change these values in the Doc settings. This provides airtight and centralized Foleon Doc governance.
⚠️ Lock Doc settings is only available for select plans. If you're interested in this functionality, contact our Customer Success Management team.
In the dashboard, go to account > Global Doc settings. Click on the lock icon of a setting you'd like to lock for team members (e.g. a user with the publisher role). This means they won't be able to change it in the Doc settings.
Let's say you added a script to the remarketing code field of the Global Doc settings. This change will automatically be reflected in the Doc settings of new Docs.
Once you lock this setting, other team members can no longer change the script in the Doc settings.
⚠️ If you added a script in the Doc settings for a specific Foleon Doc, locking this setting overrides the value. This means it's lost and replaced by the value of the Global Doc settings.
When you lock a setting from the Global Doc settings, you'll see in the Doc settings that the label of this setting instantly becomes 'Global' and locked.
Locking a setting instantly applies to the matching Doc setting of all content you create. To apply the change to live (published) content, you must (re)publish.
⚠️ To apply a locked setting to live content, you still need to (re)publish.
