Why gate your content?
Our lead generation feature allows you to block (further) access to your Foleon Doc on any page. Visitors are prompted with a pop-up and will have to fill in their personal details in order to access your Foleon Doc or the rest of it.
If you have content that’s valuable enough to gate (like eBooks or white papers), this feature is perfect for giving visitors a taste of your content before they commit to leaving their personal details for the entire thing.
It’s similar to when you order a nice bottle of wine at a restaurant, your server gives you the opportunity to taste it and ensure it meets your expectations before committing to the whole bottle. Well, why shouldn’t you offer the same sort of experience with your content?
How to set up a Lead Generation gate
In the editor, go to your Foleon Doc settings. Scroll down to the Lead Generation tab, and switch on "Gate your Foleon Doc". Select Use a native Foleon form.
This will prompt you with an overview of lead generation templates we designed to help you get started. Take your pick and hit Save.
After you’ve picked a template, you can edit and style it the way you want. Add elements and change the settings to achieve your desired look.
You can add additional fields to your lead generation form. Navigate to the form fields (making it blue) and click on Edit form.
💡At the moment, we don't support a reCAPTCHA field to prevent spam form submissions.
If you’re looking to automatically push new leads to your CRM, email marketing platform, or 1.000+ other apps using Zapier, make sure you properly set up the field names for each field in your form.
In the settings of a specific field, open the General settings, and scroll down to Field name.
We advise setting the following field names if you’re looking to collect any of these reader details:
- First name first_name
- Last name last_name
- Full name name
- Email address email
- Phone number phone
- Gender gender
- Company name company
- Job title job
This makes sure this data gets transferred correctly if you're using Zapier.
⚠️ If you’re generating leads in the European Union, ensure you include opt-ins and link to your privacy policy to get proper consent from readers. Read more about this in our blog Foleon and GDPR compliance.
Send submissions to an email address
You can receive email notifications for every form submission.
In the lead generation form builder, open the form settings by clicking on the black cogwheel icon. In the general settings, fill in one or multiple email addresses in the send submissions to field.
💡 You can add multiple email addresses by separating them with commas.
Assigning the gate to a page
When you’ve finished setting up your lead generation method, connect it to any of your pages.
The lead generation form can be found in the Pages overview. Simply grab the lead generation gate and place it in front of the page on which you want the gate to appear. Instead of gating your entire piece of content, you can give your readers access to a limited portion and make them hungry for the rest.
In the example below, you can see that the gate is linked to the second page, which is clear from the red "chain" between the two
Once you’re satisfied with your Foleon Doc and the gate you’ve created, hit Publish or Preview and witness your gated content in its full glory.
Allow reader to skip
If you want to offer readers the choice to skip and keep reading your pages without completing a form, that's possible! First, go to Pages, and click on the relevant Lead Generation gate. In Lead Generation's settings, click on General Settings, toggle on the "Allow Reader to Skip" option, and remember to republish your Doc to save the changes.
Managing your leads
You can download all lead generation submissions as a CSV from your dashboard. In your project, click on the 3 dots of a Foleon Doc and then on Get form results.
Alternatively, you can also automatically process and transfer leads from Foleon to 1,000+ other apps through our Zapier integration. Find out how this works in our article: Connecting Foleon to Zapier.
Returning visitors
Foleon places a cookie that remembers whether a visitor has passed your lead generation gate for a specific Foleon Doc. This means that if visitors reopen a gated Doc they’ve already completed, they won’t have to submit the form again — assuming they visit from the same device and browser.
This cookie is stored for that specific Doc and isn’t linked to the form used to gate. So, even if you swap out the form, returning visitors will not have to submit the new form.
💡Some visitors might use browsers or browser extensions that delete cookies automatically. In this case, these visitors might have to fill in your lead generation form every time they visit your Foleon Doc.
