Everyone loves fast loading times. That's why Foleon uses a Content Delivery Network (CDN) to speed up the loading of your content assets. This article discusses the basics of the CDN, and why we use it.
In this article
What is a Content Delivery Network (CDN)?
A Content Delivery Network (CDN) refers to a geographically distributed group of servers that work together to provide fast delivery of internet content.
The main mission of a CDN is to shorten the distance between the origin servers of Foleon (Europe-based) and the end-user, by storing a cached version of its content in multiple geographical locations (also known as "Points of Presence", or "PoP's").
Why does Foleon use a CDN?
Foleon uses a CDN to ensure that your content loads as fast as possible in different places around the globe.
For example, you have a visitor that opens a Foleon Doc in Australia. Your content will then come from a server in the Asia-Pacific region, to make sure that your content loads fast. The more traffic a Foleon Doc has in one location, the better its loading speed will be for others in the same and nearby locations.
The main advantages of using a CDN can be broken down into 4 primary components:
-
Improving Foleon Doc loading times - By distributing content closer to your visitors, by using a nearby CDN server, your audience experiences faster page loading times.
-
Increasing Foleon content availability - Thanks to their distributed nature, a CDN can handle more traffic and withstand hardware failure better than many origin servers. A CDN helps us to make sure we can maintain our platform uptime. Please consult our status page for the historical uptime of our systems.
-
Improving website security - A CDN may improve security by providing DDoS mitigation, improvements to security certificates, and other optimizations.
-
Reducing bandwidth costs - Through caching and other optimizations, CDN's are able to reduce the amount of data an origin server must provide, thus reducing hosting costs for website owners.
CDN settings in Foleon
By default, our CDN's are active to help improve the loading time of your Foleon content assets. As a Foleon user, there are no settings that you can control in the dashboard or in the editor.
However, we can turn off the use of CDN from our side on request. Disabling the use of CDN's will mean that the CDN services (StackPath and/or CloudFront) will be turned off for the complete account.
⚠️ When you ask us to disable the CDN, be aware that it will negatively impact the global loading times of your Foleon Doc.
Are you having issues with the loading times of your Foleon Docs in specific regions? There could be multiple causes for this, which would need further investigation. Please reach out to our Support team so they can troubleshoot these issues.
