Alt text — also known as alt tags and alt descriptions — helps screen-reading tools describe images to visually impaired readers. Next to that, it allows search engines to better crawl and rank your website. In this article, we show you how to add alt text to your images in the media library.

If you select an image in the media library, image data will appear on the right-hand side of the screen. Click on the name of the image on the bottom. In the example below, we click on "Office".
Here you'll be able to change the name of the image in the media library. Next to that, you can add alt text in the image alt field. In the example below, we've described the image as "Modern office building".
That's it. You've now added alt text to your image.
Checking if the alt text is already added to an image
If you're in doubt whether the alt text has been added to an image, no worries — there's an easy way to find out. Just right-click the image, then 'inspect', and open both '<figure class=' and '<div id=' attributes. Keep an eye out for the '<img alt class=' attribute. If it's there, that means there's an alt text added to that image.
To speed things up, here are the shortcuts:
- Command + Option + J, then Command + F, and look for 'alt' (for Mac)
- Control + Shift + J, then Control + F, and look for 'alt' (for Windows).
